Harwich Society’s Winter programme of monthly talks begins

For many Harwich Society members, the programme of monthly talks that take place throughout the winter are the main reason for enjoying Harwich Society membership.

Whilst unlimited free entrance to the Harwich Society’s visitor attractions throughout the Summer season and the quarterly Harwich Society magazine, Highlight, provide remarkable value for money, the Winter programme of free monthly talks provide a varied and interesting look into many fascinating subjects throughout the cold, winter months.

October sees the first of the Winter monthly talks and the opening talk will take place at the Navigator in Barrack Lane on Friday 30th October beginning at 7.30PM.

Harwich Society chairman, Andy Schooler, says, “The 2026 Summer season has been very busy and enjoyable for the volunteers who staff the Harwich Society’s visitor attractions and the Winter programme of monthly talks provides a contrast to the Society’s Summer activities.  They are always well attended and stimulate a lot of interest.”

The October talk is to be given by Mark Lewis and is titled, ‘Lighthouses and the paranormal’.

Mark Lewis is a freelance artist, designer-silversmith and retired university lecturer. He also has a passion for lighthouses and is a keen folklorist with an interest in unusual local customs and rituals. In 2013 he published a book on the folklore and popular customs of the church.  Mark’s talk will share his exploration of ghost stories, folklore, and scientific explanations related to paranormal phenomena in lighthouses around the world.

“Anything connected to lighthouses always creates interest in Harwich and this unusual look will certainly be no exception,” continued Andy Schooler.  “This year’s Winter programme of monthly talks is varied and fascinating and I’m sure that Mark is going to get us off to a great start.”

Teas and coffees will be available and a raffle will take place.
