The Travelling Pharology Archive – Pop-Up Event

A community-generated archive exploring the social history of lighthouse communities through stories, photographs, documents and objects.

The Travelling Pharology Archive is a project dedicated to preserving and sharing the human stories behind lighthouse heritage. Rather than existing in one permanent location, the Archive travels between museums, heritage sites and community spaces, growing and developing over time!

What is the Archive?

The Archive explores the lives and experiences of the people connected to lighthouses, including but not exclusive to:

lighthouse keepers and their families
lighthouse engineers
technicians
coastal communities
lighthouse enthusiasts
photographers who are drawn to lighthouses

Through photographs, documents, objects and personal memories, it aims to tell the social history of lighthouse communities and preserve stories that might otherwise be lost.

Why does it exist?

Many important stories of lighthouse life exist outside traditional museum collections, held instead by individuals, families and local communities.

The Archive provides a way to share and preserve those stories while bringing lighthouse heritage directly to new audiences around the country.

Where can you find the Archive?

The Travelling Pharology Archive appears as pop-up installations at museums, heritage sites and community venues across the UK.

Each installation reflects the local area and creates opportunities for new stories and connections to become part of the project.
