The Harwich Society’s winter programme of monthly talks is, for many members, the highlight of Harwich Society membership and the January 2025 talk is certainly going to be an interesting evening.
The Anglo Saxon burial site at Sutton Hoo near Woodbridge, Suffolk, is well known as a remarkable historic setting but the project to build a full size replica of the burial ship adds a whole new dimension to Sutton Hoo.
An Anglo Saxon nobleman, believed to be King Rædwald of East Anglia, was buried in his ship around 624AD and The Sutton Hoo Ship’s Company, formed by professionals, volunteers and enthusiasts in 2016, intends to build a full size 90 feet replica of the ship.
Harwich Society chairman, Andy Schooler, says, “This is a remarkable project and I’m sure that our members will be fascinated to learn more about the Sutton Hoo Ship’s Company and the progress being made. The Harwich Society winter programme of talks covers a wide range of topics and this one is going to attract a lot of interest.”
The talk will take place at the Navigator in Barrack Lane on Friday 31st January beginning at 7.30PM. The talks are free to all members and teas and coffees will be available.
“Harwich Society membership offers a wide range of benefits including unlimited free admission to all of our visitor attractions and the monthly talks throughout the winter are another popular reason for becoming a member,” continued Andy Schooler. “I’m sure that 2025 is going to be another successful year for the Harwich Society.”
