The Harwich Redoubt Pilot Repair Project

An exciting new chapter is now underway at the Harwich Redoubt!

For more than 200 years, the Redoubt has been at the heart of Harwich’s rich history. Thanks to funding from Historic England and The National Lottery Heritage Fund, The Harwich Society is launching a pilot repair project to help protect and preserve our town’s most impressive historic landmark.

Working alongside renovation specialists Punch Construction, the project will investigate potential causes of deterioration and trial repair techniques to help inform future conservation work. These findings will go on to shape future repairs, ensuring they’re carried out to the highest possible conservation standards.

Alongside this essential work, funding from the project will also create exciting new opportunities for local people to explore the site through volunteering, heritage activities and community events.

Get involved

For over 50 years, Harwich Society volunteers have cared for and managed the Redoubt, helping to safeguard this extraordinary site for future generations to come.

Now, we’re looking for more people to be part of its next chapter!

Whether you’re interested in practical conservation, supporting community events, sharing local history or simply giving something back to your community, we’d love to hear from you. Volunteers of all ages, backgrounds and experience levels are welcome, and absolutely no previous heritage experience is needed.

What’s coming up?

Over the coming months, a programme of events and activities will encourage more visitors to explore the story of the Redoubt, including volunteer-led tours and heritage craft skills sessions.

A highlight of the programme will be Fort Flicks, the Redoubt’s very first outdoor cinema event, hosted in collaboration with the Electric Palace Archive Project this September.

Further details about Fort Flicks and the wider programme of activities will be announced soon!
