Cross the moat to enjoy the Redoubt Fort open day!
At 11AM on Bank Holiday Monday (26th August) the gates to Harwich Redoubt Fort will swing open and visitors will be able to cross the moat free of charge to enjoy the 2019 Redoubt Fort Open Day.
The Redoubt Fort is a 200 year old scheduled ancient monument restored and managed by Harwich Society volunteers and the annual open day is a popular event with both residents and visitors to Harwich.
Leader of the Harwich Society’s Redoubt Fort volunteers, Dan Beck, says, “The organisation of the annual Redoubt Fort Open Day involves a lot of hard work but we have a great team of volunteers who love the opportunity to show this wonderful old Napoleonic fort off to the public. With wonderful views, amazing history and lots of stalls and attractions the Redoubt Fort Open Day is a great event to visit.”
Alongside the raffle, bottle stall, tombola etc will be various old fashioned games to try such as Roll the Coin, Splat the Rat and Wheel of Fortune and Harwich Society volunteers will be serving refreshments.
Harwich Society guides will be on hand to provide tours of the rooms containing historic exhibits and, of course, there will be the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful views over Harwich Harbour and Historic Harwich.
“People are fascinated by the Redoubt Fort even when we haven’t got all of the open day attractions to enjoy and it really is a unique location,” continued Dan Beck. “It’s always great to see first time visitors’ astonishment when they come through the gates and take in what is in front of them. There really is nowhere quite like Harwich’s Redoubt Fort!”
