HARWICH SOCIETY COMMISSIONS PLAQUE TO RECOGNISE FAMOUS AUSTRALIAN POET AND AUTHOR

For the final thirty years of his life, Australian author and poet, Randolph Stow, chose to live in Harwich and the Harwich Society has commissioned a plaque to recognise his time in our town.

Randolph Stow was world renowned in literary circles in the late 1950s and 1960s and his work is part of the national curriculum in Australian schools.

His family originated in Suffolk and Randolph was born in Geraldton Western Australia in 1935.  He came to live in Harwich in 1981, remaining until his passing in 2010.  Although published under the name of Randolph Stow he was known as Mick Stow throughout his time living in Harwich.

Chairman of the Harwich Society, Andy Schooler, says, “It was Sue Daish, one of our trustees, who brought the idea of commissioning a plaque to the board of trustees and it was unanimously agreed.  Although we are not in a position to erect the plaque immediately we thought it would be nice to unveil it during National Heritage weekend.”

The plaque will be unveiled outside of Randolph Stow’s Harwich home at 28 King’s Head Street at 11.30AM on Sunday 14th September and all are welcome to attend.
