The Harwich High Lighthouse is a popular Harwich Society visitor attraction.
Visitors are drawn to the iconic lighthouse for its spectacular views, the history of the structure and its social history, the lighthouse serving as a dwelling until 1960. The team of volunteers who staff the Grade II* listed structure are seeking help in increasing their knowledge about the people who lived there from the time it ceased to be used as a lighthouse in 1863 until 1960.
Anne Williams, who is leading on the social history aspect of the lighthouse, says, “We wish to hear from anyone who actually lived in the lighthouse, had friends or family who lived there or whose parents told them stories about people who lived there.”
Since the Harwich Society took over the lighthouse as a visitor attraction a lot of research has been done into the resident families and the volunteers now want to learn first-hand about what it was like to live in a home that had 77 stairs, no electricity and no running water.
“I would like to hear from anyone with a story or photos about what it was like to live in Harwich’s High Lighthouse,” continued Anne Williams. “I can be contacted at annefelicia25@gmail.com and we will use this information to further enhance our displays to share the experiences with visitors to the Lighthouse.”
