When the Harwich Society Quiz Team decided to run a music quiz as a fund raiser for the local aid effort to assist Ukraine they had no idea how the community would rally round.
Before the evening of the quiz Morrison’s supermarket had donated raffle prizes as had regulars in the Royal Oak pub and organiser Garry Calver arrived at the quiz with £200 already donated by well-wishers who would not be attending.
Fourteen teams filled the Royal Oak’s hall and at the end of the evening an incredible £824 had been raised.
Quiz organiser, Garry Calver, says, “The Royal Oak public house is always incredibly generous and supportive towards Harwich Society quizzes and the community followed suit in support of this fund raiser for Ukraine. We knew there was a fantastic local team assisting in the aid effort so it was nice to be able to raise some funds to help them to help Ukraine.”
The Harwich Society Quiz Team runs a monthly general knowledge quiz at the Royal Oak public house and run four or five music quizzes in addition throughout the year. It was after listening to Rev Canon Margaret Shaw saying that all that could be asked of people is that they do what they can that Garry suggested to the team that they put on a music quiz for Ukraine. All of the team agreed and the organisation began.
“Margaret’s words inspired us to do the one thing we could do – run a quiz night and the community backed us all the way,” continued Garry Calver. “We know the local aid effort will make good use of the money and hopefully it will do a little bit to help Ukrainian people during their dreadful ordeal.”
