The Harwich Society Winter programme of monthly talks will continue on Friday 28th November with a talk by John Warren titled ‘Ipswich and the Orwell’.
The talk will explore the unique connection between Ipswich and the River Orwell which meant that a vessel could arrive from the North Sea on one tide and, having discharged and loaded cargo, return to sea on the ebb tide. Maritime trade has flourished in Ipswich via the River Orwell since Saxon times and the connection has influenced the development of Ipswich over the centuries.
Harwich Society chairman, Andy Schooler, says, “Harwich Society members enjoy the variety of subjects covered by the Winter programme of monthly talks and this one will undoubtedly raise a lot of interest.”
The monthly talks are free to all Harwich Society members and are a popular part of Harwich Society membership. They take place at the Navigator in Barrack Lane on the final Friday of each month throughout the winter, this one being Friday, 28th November, and begin at 7.30PM. Teas and coffees are available along with a raffle.
“This Winter’s programme of talks has already covered the archaeology of Colchester and the first Essex witch trials so this talk will take us in another very interesting direction,” continued Andy Schooler. “Harwich’s connections with Ipswich and the River Orwell are very strong and it will be fascinating to get the perspective from a few miles upstream.”
