Harwich Society monthly talk should go with a bang

Outside of the busy Summer season, the Harwich Society runs a programme of monthly talks throughout the winter and these are a very popular aspect of Harwich Society membership.

On Friday, February 28th Harwich Society members will be visited by another Essex historic society when Paul Hounsell, Dave Belcher and Jeff Skillman, from the Purfleet Heritage and Military Centre provide the monthly talk on their organisation.

The Purfleet Heritage Centre, Magazine No 5, is a Grade I Listed Building, built between 1763 and 1765 to house the UK’s gunpowder reserve.  The talk will cover the history and heritage of Purfleet on Thames from Tudor times to the present day including the story of the Purfleet garrison and rifle range.

Harwich Society chairman, Andy Schooler, says, “The Harwich Society’s winter programme of monthly talks is very popular and covers a fascinating range of topics.  It’s particularly interesting when the talk is given by another historic society and, if there’s gunpowder involved, this one should go with a bang!”

The talk will take place in the Navigator, Barrack Lane, Harwich and will begin at 7.30PM  It is free to all Harwich Society members and teas and coffees will be available.
