Harwich Society October talk on the First Essex Witch Trials

The very popular Harwich Society Winter programme of monthly talks is under way and the subject for the October talk on Friday 31st October is ‘The First Essex Witch Trials’ by Peggy Griffin.

From the mid 16th century through t the late 17th century over 700 women were accused of witchcraft across East Anglia and Essex was particularly affected.  In 1645 the infamous Witchfinder General, Matthew Hopkins, identified 50 women in Harwich as witches.

Harwich Society chairman, Andy Schooler, says, “This dreadful aspect of our history is, nonetheless, a fascinating subject and Peggy Griffin brings a thoughtful and sometimes humorous approach to this important time in our history.  As usual, I am sure it is going to be an interesting evening.”

The Harwich Society’s Winter programme of monthly talks take place in the Navigator in Barrack Lane, Harwich and commence at 7.30PM.  They are free of charge to Harwich Society members and teas and coffees are available.
