1778 - Government House

The official note by the Department of National Heritage (1994) says: "Robert Adams designed a castle like house for this site in 1778 for the local MP John Robinson. The present building bears little relation to this proposal and was possibly a more economical substitute.

The Recorder, the Earl of Abergavenny, lived here in 1798. It was taken over by the military in the early 19th century, hence the name Government House.

The main entrance is on the east side (facing Felixstowe). A 19th century porch covers the original door, arched doorway and fanlight. The red brick wall on the east side of the house is the original wall.

The house has been divided into flats and is in a poor state of repair. It has however recently been purchased and is now undergoing extensive renovations.
