1670 / 1766 / 1801 - The Growth of the town

Government tax figures show that the number of houses in Harwich rose from 233 in 1670 to 375 in 1766. The number rose again to 487 in 1801.

This rise indicated that work was available and people were moving in from neighbouring villages to live in a town which fulfilled the function of a market, a port, a centre of maritime activities and a seaside resort.
