1318 - First Town Charter

Harwich grew quickly during the 13th century and into the 14th century. It obtained a grant for a market in 1253 and a borough charter in 1318.

Thomas de Brotherton, Earl of Norfolk and step-brother to Edward II became lord of the manor of Harwich-cum-Dovercourt in 1313. He granted the charter to the town in 1318 and it was confirmed by the King the following year while he was trying to recapture Berwick-on-Tweed.

The charter has been lost, however there is some idea as to its contents:

'At the siege of Berwick on September 16, the King by his charters grants to his most dear Brother, that the town of Harwic be a Free-Borough, and that the said Earl's men and tenants of the said town, and their heirs and successors be free burgesses: and that they use and enjoy the Liberties and free customs appertaining to a free Borough, with a market on Tuesday, and free customs belonging to the like markets etc.'
